A man stands in an apron and rolled sleeves in the water door of a building along a canal. Another figure is seen kneeling and reaching down to the water at the left edge of the water door. The building and its reflection fills the frame; the emphasis is on the figures in the darkened opening, along with their reflections, while the upper story of the building is only summarily indicated.

Seen from the water's edge, a canal in the foreground curves to the right and back into space. In the distant view, buildings with balconies and chimney pots are visible as well as a bridge that is cropped by the curve of the waterway. In the foreground, across the canal, are several arched entryways. A dark waterdoor is open and shows a man on the steps and two shadowy figures behind him framed in the doorway; a lantern hangs overhead. To the right, another arched doorway with a metal grille above faces the canal, but is closed. A small open window on the seond floor can be seen between the arched doors.

This photograph depicts a view of a canal lined with stone buildings; an ornate covered-bridge spans the water, connecting the structures on either side. Two men stand on an embankment to which a series of gondolas are docked.

A large ornate waterdoor faces onto a canal. On the threshold near the water, a woman bends down towards the surface of the canal. Behind the doorway stands another figure in the shadows and beyond is another opening to a small square or open-air workspace. The doorway consists of a large lunette shaped transom light over the door and the portal is flanked on either side by large arched windows. The glazing is all fitted into a fine network of mullions in either square on diamond patterns. The door and windows are each framed by carved pilasters and engaged corinthian capitals. Below the windows are bands of rosettes and other carved ornaments that extends to the water level.

A nighttime view of canals in Venice. Walls of buildings at rough right angles to one another, connected by a footbridge in the distance, are lit to reveal massings of the architecture--balconies, doorways, windows. There are no people apparent; the sky and water are both very dark.

Just to the right of center is a large building with several domes. Several small boats and gondolas are visible to the left of center. A cloudy and blustery sky occupies the top of the image.

A two-story building fronting onto a canal is shown in this print. Three figures are gathered on the second floor balcony while a seated woman and standing man are visible at the water door below the balcony. At the top of the image hanging cloth (possibly laundry) creates a kind of canopy over the figures on the balcony. Adjacent buildings are only summarily drawn and the emphasis of this image is on the dramatic juxtapositions of the projecting elements, e.g. balcony, laundry, with the shadows cast on other parts of the building and figures and in the reflections in the dark surface of the water.
